About Us

Foundation and History

The John Evans Almshouses were founded by the will of John Evans of Mardol, Shrewsbury after his death on 12th November 1841. He lies in the family tomb chest in the grounds of Old St Chads, Shrewsbury.

The Trust was founded in September 1842 and Trustees were appointed. They purchased two acres of land in Meole Brace, a village south-west of Shrewsbury but now lying within the town. As a result, one of the Trustees is always the Vicar of Holy Trinity, Meole Brace.

The Trust commissioned a building for nine female residents and a warden. The existing old Almshouses were opened in 1854.

In 1984, the old Almshouses were sold to enable the construction of two rows of modern bungalows, four in each terrace. These are where our current tenants live.
